For many people, these are areas that contact bed sheets rather than the pillow. If your psoriasis is concentrated in areas that touch the pillow (scalp, face, neck, ears), a silk pillowcase will have the most targeted benefit. Silk sheets are a more significant investment and may be warranted if your psoriasis is widespread or particularly active on body areas that contact the mattress surface.
Does silk help with inverse psoriasis specifically?
Silk's combination of low friction and breathability may be beneficial for inverse psoriasis, which affects skin folds and is particularly sensitive to both friction and moisture. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that rubbing and sweating aggravate inverse psoriasis. A breathable, smooth surface that does not trap heat or moisture is a better choice than synthetic materials for anyone whose psoriasis falls in skin-fold areas. Whether silk is specifically better than a good quality breathable cotton in these areas is harder to say definitively.
I use a topical steroid on my scalp. Will it damage my silk pillowcase?
Topical treatments, including steroid foams, creams, and ointments, can transfer to a pillowcase and build up on the fabric over time. This is a reason to wash your silk pillowcase more frequently when using active topical treatments, not a reason to avoid silk. Most topical psoriasis treatments will not damage silk in the quantities typically used, but oil-based preparations may leave residue that regular laundering needs to address. Check any prescription ointment's ingredients if you notice the fabric changing texture over time.
Should children with psoriasis use a silk pillowcase?
The same principles apply: silk's smooth, cool surface may reduce overnight friction and heat discomfort for children with psoriasis. The OEKO-TEX certification is particularly worth prioritising for younger children, as it provides independent verification of absence of harmful substances.
